Hours Opportunities

What Constitutes an Hour?

AGS hours are defined as hours spent doing board-approved community service and fundraising activities. Fifteen of these hours are required for AGS transcript notation. Going above and beyond in these hours significantly increases your chances of earning end-of-semester scholarships and non-monetary awards. Beyond your AGS certified community service, up to 40 non-board-approved community service hours will be considered for scholarships, such as hours spent serving dinner at your local homeless shelter.

Attend the General Meetings

Each time you attend a general meeting you earn 1 community service hour, even if the meeting is shorter than an hour! Up to 5 of those hours will count toward your 15 required hours for AGS membership and any extra go toward scholarship eligibility. Attend meetings, and don't forget to sign in! We meet Wednesdays at 5:00PM in room 225 of Cabrillo College.

Participate in Events

Each hour you spend preparing for or participating in AGS events counts towards your 15 AGS service hours. Examples of AGS events include, but are not limited to, AGS Bakesales, Car Washes, AGS sponsored Beach Clean-Ups, AGS Book Sales, and our semesterly Teacher/Staff Appreciation Dinners.

Chair an Event

For each event that you chair, you earn 5 hours of AGS community service just for being the chair. That's in addition to the hours spent preparing and participating in the event. See chairing events for more.

How Can I Make Outside Hours AGS Hours?

If you have an idea for a new board-sponsored community service event, please contact a board member with your idea and a written or vocal description of the activity involved. Here are a few simple rules to follow: the service proposition should be presented to the board at least three weeks ahead of the day of the event and the event must be open for all AGS members to participate in (no eligibility criteria.) The event must not be ongoing or perpetual. While multiple days may be scheduled for the event, there must be a definite end-point to student participation in order to avoid perpetual work or obligation for student participants.

While we will make every effort to bring your proposed event to fruition, please understand that we cannot ensure the acceptance of your proposed activity. Activity approval will be conducted on a case-by-case basis and all decisions regarding approval or disapproval are final. There will be no retroactive AGS hours given for activities approved after-the-fact. Only future activities will be considered for AGS approval.

What are Double Hours?

When participating in double-hour events, each hour that you spend counts as 2 for membership and scholarship purposes, thus the term "double hours". Some major events will be labeled as double-hour events throughout the semester.

Double Dipping

Double Dipping is the claiming of community service hours which benefit you financially, scholastically or in other ways. An example of double dipping would be claiming AGS service hours for a beach cleanup which was sponsored for extra-credit in your marine biology class. Double dipping is strictly prohibited.
